The Piankeshaw Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution unveiled an America 250 painting, above, created by members Susie Frazier and Charla Perez. The sign serves as a reminder of the upcoming milestone for our country. The Piankeshaw Chapter will join the Sons of the American Revolution for an American Revolution camp display on Friday, July 3, at 4:00 at the Scribner House. The City of New Albany festivities begin at 6:00 p.m. at Riverfront Park.

New Albany, Indiana – The “Bring Back Old Glory” contest sponsored by the Piankeshaw Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution announced the winner on July 3. The Floyd County Historical Society submitted a flag that had been donated to them by the Budd Family at an unknown date.

This well-worn flag is displayed at the Floyd County Historical Society's Padgett Museum. This homemade flag belonged to Colonel Gilbert Budd (b.1789-d.1877). Budd Road is named for Colonel Budd. He was a soldier in the War of 1812 and fought in the Battle of the Thames where he saw Tecumseh fall. In 1844 he oversaw a battalion of Greys, Blues, and Yellow Jackets here in Floyd County. This information was taken from his obituary in the Ledger Standard on February 8, 1877.
The flag has 37 stars that are arranged in an unusual pattern, indicating that stars were added as states joined the Union. The flag dates to sometime between the mid-1840s and 1860s. The Budd family proudly displayed the flag at their home for many years.
“We invite people to stop by the museum to take a closer look,” says Ann Baumgartle, President of the Floyd County Historical Society. “It's interesting to see that when the flag was made, the blue fabric wasn't big enough and was pieced. There are also areas where the flag was mended, and the stars handstitched.”
The Piankeshaw Chapter awarded the Floyd County Historical Society a $100.00 donation along with a certificate and medal. The FCHS Padgett Museum is at 509 W. Market Street in New Albany.
